Wikid GRRLS Session 6 at the Barrie School

wikid-grrls-logo.jpgToday we focused on the second part of adding content to the wikispace – something more elaborate than what we concentrated on the week before. This session was definitely a continuation of the fifth session, although I have to say in retrospect that I should have planned each one of them out more as a separate entity. One thing you have to account for (apart from technology not always working) is that even in a small group, the attendance will change slightly from week to week, and so if you plan something across two sessions, there will always be at least one person in the second session who has no clue what you are talking about and will disrupt the flow (through no fault of her own).

We concentrated on finding Creative Commons images and proper attribution (including learning about the different kinds of licenses, creating graphs in Google Trends which we could then embed in our wiki page, embedding YouTube videos (and adjusting their size on the page), embedding Google Maps (although creating one’s own google Map seemed a bit too far-fetched at this stage), and other “cool” things. I think perhaps we put too much emphasis on these gadgets and not enough on the research & citation part, and content construction. This translated into pretty messy wiki pages in the end, full of various multimedia nuggets but not very well structured…
